Kathryn Furniss
Born in England but moving to Nelson as a small child, Kathryn was encouraged to explore her natural creative abilities, thanks to growing up with an artistic father. She eventually settled on painting and has continued to develop as a self-taught artist - drawing inspiration from pacific culture, native fauna & flora, landscapes and native birds. "I use birds to tell stories or portray feelings, the shadow birds connecting the past with the present, being a spirit, past loved one or guardian of the other. Upright paddles stand for protection and safety, boats and oars representing arrival from and travelling to far off places we have been, whether in reality or in our dreams". Kathryn mainly works in acrylic and ink - incorporating a range of mediums to create a sense of depth. In the past 18 years she has had numerous successful exhibitions throughout Aotearoa, with her work in many private collections near and afar. She works from her home studio in a historic house just 15 minutes walk from Nelson City - where she lives with her family.
