IAN BLACKWELL DESIGNS:

Our products are made from kiln dried New Zealand Rimu Veneer and finished with an organic citrus based oil. Because Rimu has such a distinctive grain every one of our products is truly unique. We are proud to be New Zealand made and all our wooden products are lovingly created and distributed by our talented team in Riverton (30 minutes West of Invercargill). Cut using the latest laser technology every product is then assembled and finished by hand. You can be sure that every one of our pieces has been put together with great care, attention to detail and the Pride of the South! About Ian: Born and raised here I have always felt passionate about New Zealand and our ‘can do’ attitude. I try to infuse a slice of Aotearoa into every piece created. My career actually began in footwear design but my love of New Zealand timbers soon took over. Using my technical skills and experience from over the years I have developed a range I'm truly proud of. Now based in Auckland’s West Coast, my wife Kitty and I work from our studio creating and marketing our latest products. I feel privileged to do what I do and love representing this land in my work Inspirational words from Ian: The word yes is of great importance to me. The number one principle for my company is ‘Yes, we can do it!’ I apply this rule-of-thumb to my jobs, time frames, products and pretty much whatever comes along. Once we’ve said yes, we as a company then sit down and figure out how we are going to make that happen and this keeps us learning and growing. Preparing yourself to expect the unexpected in business is also a must even when the unexpected isn’t so rosy. One of the most challenging occasions for us was the time the country ran out of rimu and all our products were made out of rimu. In hindsight it was the best thing that happened, as we now use a variety of materials for manufacturing and have way more colour in the range than we ever did. It was a salutary lesson in having all your eggs in one basket.
