Metal Bird - Kererū, Regular

How unforgettable is the whoosh of the bold and beautiful Kererū flying through the bush and crash-landing into a tree? Imagine a century ago seeing 100 of these beauties powering together through the skies. The Kererū is literally our only bird left big enough to disperse the seeds of our largest native trees, so they’re a life saver for the likes of Tawa and Karaka. Once upon a time plump Kereru made tasty eating for Maori but they’re now protected, giving them the cheeky nickname ‘illegal tegel’. Who doesn’t need a Kererū in their life?

Measurements: 30 x 34 cm

Easily installed with the tap of a hammer (tip - pre-drill hard wood), Crafted in 3mm Corten® 'weathering' Steel to form a beautiful patina that changes with the seasons .

Metal Bird by Phil Walters

Metalbird is the brainchild of Phil Walters, an industrial designer and lover of street art and New Zealand’s native flora and fauna. Metalbird started as a guerrilla street art project, all over New Zealand’s North Island, Metalbird stencils appeared. In parks, in fences and on power poles. His handcrafted artworks bring together his passions: the tough steel and stencil design, a nod to his urban art roots. "Our designs represent some of New Zealand’s most precious birdlife. Art isn’t just something you see on a gallery wall – it can be the way the light shines through a coloured window or the splash of spray-paint on a city overpass."
