"Kiwi" A4 Matted Print - Tara Cassidy

Tara Cassidy on Kiwi: "The kiwi is a treasured national icon, endemic to New Zealand. There are five species of kiwi and all are nocturnal. Unlike other birds, smell is their primary sense and their nostrils are located at the end of their beak which is very useful for foraging on the forest floor.

Although they have tiny wings, they are completely flightless which makes them vulnerable to introduced species. What they lack in wingspan, however, they make up for with powerful legs which are about one third of their body weight and can run as fast as a human.

The ladder fern in the background is the rare native Nephrolepis flexuosa, often confused with the more invasive tuber ladder fern (N. cordifolia)."

Tara Cassidy

Tara is an artist based in West Auckland, a place which she credits for her love and curiosity for the abundant natural flora and fauna of Aotearoa. While her tertiary studies initially began with biological sciences, Tara instead followed her passion for creativity and completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design in 2016. Her pieces are striking, as she works primarily with pencils; for intricate depictions of native wildlife of Aotearoa. Since 2018 she has been working with Angie and selling her pieces, continuing to develop her eye for detail and an impressive ability to convey textures through pencil alone - we love to admire and explore her amazing works!
