The Story Behind Ian Blackwell Woodware
Born and raised on a Waikato farm, Ian developed an early appreciation for New Zealand’s native timbers. A carpentry and cabinet making apprenticeship led him into a career working with wood, developing technical skills that would eventually fuel his artistic vision.
From Craftsman to Artist
After years of developing his woodworking expertise, Ian established his own range of hand-finished products. Now working alongside his wife Kitty from their West Auckland studio, they create and market pieces that celebrate New Zealand’s unique timber heritage.
A Passion for Rimu
Rimu remains Ian’s personal timber of choice. With its distinctive grain patterns, every piece becomes truly unique. “Because Rimu has such a distinctive grain, every one of my products is truly unique,” he explains.
Materials and Craftsmanship
New Zealand Rimu
Many of Ian’s products are made from kiln-dried New Zealand Rimu Veneer, a native timber prized for its striking and contrasting grain unlike any other. Each piece showcases the natural beauty of this sustainable resource.
Precision Laser Technology
Using the latest laser technology, each piece is precision-cut to exact specifications. This modern technique ensures clean lines and intricate detail work that would be impossible to achieve by hand alone.
Hand-Finished Quality
After laser cutting, every item is thoughtfully assembled and finished by hand. The final touch is an organic citrus-based oil finish that protects the wood while highlighting its natural grain patterns.

Caring for Your Ian Blackwell Woodware
General Care
Wipe with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or extreme temperatures, which can cause the wood to fade or warp.
Re-oiling
For items that see regular use, occasional re-oiling with a food-safe wood oil will maintain the finish and protect the timber for years to come.
