Crushes
With a bit of spare time and a lot of clothing overflow, Sarah Firmston and Rose Hope were in the perfect position to start a path to conscious consumerism. The dream was to create a collective, stocking handcrafted goods and vintage clothing. In 2011 they opened a small store, called The Bread and Butter Letter, on New North Road. Two years later they decided to go bigger and moved into a larger space on Karangahape Road. Whether it’s a vintage piece or a product made by a local artist or Crushes’ own in-house brand, the goods won’t cost or harm the earth. The ultimate goal is to handpick and create products that can be gifted, used and cherished for years, without ending up in a landfill. Crushes has grown to be a platform for ethical purchasing and self expression - highlighting values from female owned, Maori and Pasifika businesses to sustainable and handmade wares. They want Crushes to be the home for conscious consumerism, a place where ethical values are practised and promoted.
