Blunt Umbrella - Award-winning New Zealand umbrella brand

Discover the iconic New Zealand umbrella brand that revolutionised rainy day protection with patented wind-resistant design.

Founded in New Zealand over 20 years ago, Blunt Umbrellas has revolutionised umbrella design with its patented radial tensioning system. What began as one Kiwi’s frustration with flimsy, dangerous umbrellas on London’s streets has grown into an internationally acclaimed brand that represents true New Zealand innovation.

Key Facts

  • Founded: 2004 in New Zealand
  • Founder: Greig Brebner
  • Headquarters: Auckland, New Zealand
  • Specialty: Wind-resistant umbrellas with blunt tips
  • Recognition: Multiple international design awards

The Origin Story

The idea for Blunt was born whilst founder Greig Brebner was navigating the streets of London nearly twenty years ago. Seeing poorly made umbrellas break apart, with dangerous pointed tips protruding, blowing inside out, and ending up in landfill – he knew there had to be a better way.

Rather than accepting the status quo, Brebner returned to New Zealand and set about creating what would become “the single most significant advancement in umbrella design in over a century.”

“We don’t just make umbrellas – we engineer joy.” — Blunt Brand Philosophy

Revolutionary Design Features

Patented Blunt Tips

Unlike traditional umbrellas with sharp, exposed points, Blunt’s signature rounded tips distribute tension evenly across the canopy. This creates a safer, stronger umbrella that won’t poke eyes or snag on clothing in crowded spaces.

Radial Tensioning System

The unique patented and trademarked Blunt shape features a fully tensioned canopy for unparalleled performance. This engineering breakthrough allows the umbrella to withstand winds that would destroy conventional umbrellas.

Premium Materials

Every Blunt umbrella is built to last, using high-quality materials including reinforced fibreglass ribs and durable canopy fabric. The result is an umbrella designed for years of use, not months.

The Product Range

Core Collection

The core range includes compact umbrellas perfect for everyday carry, featuring the signature Blunt engineering in a portable size.

Exec Range

Larger umbrellas designed for those who want maximum coverage without compromising on the wind-resistant technology Blunt is famous for.

Branded Umbrellas

Blunt offers corporate branding options, allowing businesses to put their logo on one of the world’s most recognisable umbrella designs.

2023 Rebrand: Engineering Joy

In 2023, Blunt unveiled its new brand identity, designed in collaboration with Auckland agency Milk. The rebrand embraces the future while honouring a 20-year legacy.

New Visual Identity

The new wordmark and ‘B’ symbol connect deeply with the iconic blunt curves of the umbrella. A custom typeface called “Blunt Sans” was created specifically for the brand – both technical and refined, bold and strong.

The new brand positioning centres on “Engineering Joy” – reflecting both the technical excellence and the emotional satisfaction of owning a Blunt umbrella.

Sustainability & Global Reach

Twenty years on, Blunt now has a team around the globe growing the brand, sharing the joy that is a Blunt umbrella. The company provides ongoing repairs long after an umbrella is sold – a testament to their commitment to sustainability and customer service.

Built to Last, Not Landfill

Unlike disposable umbrellas that end up in landfill after a single storm, Blunt umbrellas are designed for longevity. The company offers repair services, replacement parts, and encourages customers to keep their umbrellas for years rather than seasons.

Where to Buy

Blunt umbrellas are available through their official website, premium retailers across New Zealand including Air New Zealand’s Airpoints Store, and selected international stockists. Heritage New Zealand Shop and other quality NZ gift stores also carry the range.
